A intense 4 day backpacking trip Sierra Travese in the Biosphere Reserve Sierra la Laguna, the hike starts in Santiago town, on the east side of the mountain, close to sea level and takes us to 6,600 ft of altitude—the highest point in the sierra, from where you can contemplate both seas, the pacific sea and the gulf of California, we came down trough the west side, finishing in Todos Santos.
This hike offers plenty of opportunities to observe endemic species of flora and fauna as you pass through the different ecosystems of the sierra, ranging from tropical dry forest to the oak and pine forest found at higher elevations.
The area it has been described as an "ecological treasure-house" because its unique and fragile ecosystem and the large diversity of endemic flora and fauna species.
Trip Description
5 days — 4 nights
Day 1 Arrive to Santiago during the day. Short hike around Santiago, we visit amaizing natural pools and hot spring on the area. Lunch and dinner included. Before going to bed we get gear and food organize and pack ready to go next morning. Overnight: Camping at San Dionisio ranch, on the base of the sierra.
Day 2 After breakfast we start hiking Strenuous hike—6 to 8 hours- to 3,000 ft where we will set up camp for the night. Rest and refresh in the majestic granite pool of water.
Day 3 We will continue the steady hike up carrying backpacks to “La Laguna”, a flat valley at 6000 ft that once was a lagoon. Set up base camp there. In the afternoon we visit Cerro de San Antonio, the highest point in the sierra at 6,600 ft. Fantastic views to the Sea of Cortes and to the Pacific
Day 4 Carrying day bags hike to the Picacho. The second highest point in the sierra, that stands out in a wall with more of 3000 ft of free fall. Have lunch there with the amazing view of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Then head back to camp to relax and enjoy a campfire under the stars
Day 5 After breakfast and breaking camp head down to the base of the sierra trough the west side. Arrive to Todos Santos around 3 pm in the afternoon. Optional ride to Cerritos beach to swimm, refresh and play on the waves with buggy boards. |
